We’re often asked for our top design tips for different rooms in the home, so we are going to share expert advice based on our projects, experience and client feedback. First up: the kitchen.
Although it’s a highly functional space, the kitchen is also the heart of the home, especially for families and those who love to entertain. A well-planned kitchen can make daily life easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable. Here are our top 10 tips to get the most out of your kitchen:

1. Empty Island
Kitchen islands are great for prep, storage and casual seating. We always recommend keeping them appliance-free (no hob or sink) to avoid clutter, simplify cleaning, and maintain a calm, open look.
2. Skip the Upper Cupboards Removing upper cabinets creates a more spacious, airy feel and allows natural light to brighten the worktop. It also frees up the splashback to become a design feature and saves costs.
3. Task Lighting
Layer your lighting carefully. Use under-cabinet, wall or directional lights to ensure work surfaces are well lit, this is both functional and atmospheric.
4. Smart Storage
Maximise every inch with full-height cupboards, internal drawer systems, pull-out bins, and clever corner solutions. A pantry or appliance garage keeps things tidy, while a hidden charging drawer keeps devices off the counter.
5. Drawers Over Cupboards
Lower drawers are far more practical than cupboards. They’re easier to access, better for organising, and eliminate the need to rummage at the back of a deep shelf.

6. Easy Cleaning
Choose finishes that are low-maintenance and fingerprint-resistant. Opt for under-mounted sinks, ceiling-height cabinetry to avoid dust traps, and durable flooring, tiles often outperform wood in high-use areas.
7. Think Ahead with Sockets
You’ll always need more than you think. Plan socket locations carefully, including discreet spots in islands or drawers for device charging.
8. Fridge Placement
Position the fridge outside the main prep zone so family members can grab snacks or drinks without disrupting cooking tasks.
9. Extractor Hood
Always install a ducted extractor. It’s essential for ventilation and air quality, and modern options can be discreet or even a design statement.
10. Underfloor Heating
Warm floors increase comfort and free up wall space. Electric systems are ideal for one-room renovations, offering even heat distribution and energy efficiency.
